Warning: SPOILERS for Dragon Ball DAIMA episode #1Finally, following years of speculation,Dragon Ball Daimaexplains the Potara plot hole fromDragon Ball Superin its very first episode. And it isn’t the first time the earrings' abilities have been retconned, as Goku and Vegeta’s split while fighting Buu went largely unexplained inDragon Ball Z. Luckily for fans,it seemsDaimais intent on confirming series lore.

Dragon Ball’s timeline has always been a talking point for fansof the iconic anime franchise, due to inconsistencies and plot holes among its many different entries. One of those plot holes that has always been a point of discussion revolves around the power of the Potara earrings, used for fusion. When Kais use the earrings, the fusion is supposed to be permanent, but Supreme Kai and Kibito inexplicably defuse forDragon Ball Super, after using the earrings duringZ.

Majin Buu Is the Key to Reversing Potara Fusion

Supreme Kai and Kibito Defuse After Being Absorbed by Buu

Supreme Kai’s and Kibito’s fusion initially sparked debate when the two appeared separately inDragon Ball Super, despite never having separated inZand remaining fused inGT.Superinitially explained away the plot inconsistencywith Supreme Kai’s claim to have wished on the Dragon Balls to be separated. Now,Daimafurther clarifies thatthe two Kais allowed themselves to be absorbed by Majin Buu, and when inside, naturally split in the same way Vegito did during the Buu Saga.

Kibito also explains thatBuu’s body produces a mysterious sort of gas that is able to reverse Potara fusion. What follows is a humorous line from Supreme Kai, who states that he didn’t want to remain fused with Kibito because he was old. What fans have deliberated on for years was finally resolved inDaimawith a rather brief explanation, and one that seems to finally bethe official reason for Potara fusions not being permanent. However, while one plot hole has been resolved, the latest development regarding Potara may just introduce new questions.

The Potara’s New Rules Rewrite Dragon Ball Canon

Is Potara Fusion Permanent For Mortals Or Not?

Dragon Ball Superattempted to explain the reason why Vegito’s fusion was not permanent, when Gowasu explained that only Kais remain forever fused after using the earrings. For mortals, the fusion lasts only an hour or less, depending on the power of the fused warrior. This explanation then gives the reason for Vegito’s second defusion duringthe Goku Black Arc, effectively tying up the loose ends of mortal Potara use.

Now thatDaimahas walked back on those rules, establishing that Buu was the reason Goku and Vegeta defused after all,it becomes unclear whether Vegito is permanent or not, and makes their split while fighting Zamasu even more confusing. It is technically possible that both explanations can exist all at once, but that would likely only further muddy fusion’s ruleset.Dragon Ballwill always seemingly have questions surrounding its canon, but nevertheless,Daimahas provided an answer to a long-running and heated debate, and will likely expand on the series' lore following a promising first episode.
