The ending of theDigimon Adventure 02anime has been a matter of debate among fans for several years. While the series is universally beloved, its epilogue has been heavily criticized for feeling out of place, and fans have often preferred to ignore it entirely. Whenthe 25th anniversary celebratory video,Digimon Adventure -BEYOND-, was released, several fans cheered, believing that the ending of the second season had been retconned.

Yet, as more and more viewers have voiced their doubts about the canon status of02’s, the words of the franchise’s producer, Yosuke Kinoshita, have resurfaced. After the release of theLast Evolution Kizunafilm, the man declared that the ending of the sequel was never planned to be changed. Yet, his statement could also be hiding something more.

Adventure 02’s Epilogue Is Here To Stay

Kinoshita Does Not Agree With the Idea of the Ending Being Altered

Right before the release of theDigimon Adventure: Last EvolutionKizuna’s Blu-ray version, the website Blending Cool had a chance to speak with Kinoshita about the behind-the-scenes of the film. The interview approached several topics, from surprising cameos included to the basic ideals the franchise has maintained over the years. As they approached the end of the conversation, the interviewer talked about the topic of theDigimon Adventure 02ending having been retconned by the movie. The ending seemed to go against the epilogue that fans had grown familiar with for more than a decade.

Digimon Adventure Is Officially Over, Marking the End of One of Anime’s Classics

The Digimon franchise is ready to say goodbye to the cast of Adventure, as confirmed by the director of the recently released celebr video.

Without delay, the producer explained that the movie did not have the intent of altering the ending of the second season of the anime.Kizuna’s ending occurred several years before the epilogue seen during the02anime, meaning thatthe franchise still had several years to reach that moment.Nonetheless, Kinoshita revealed that he could not ensure that this decision would not be changed in the future. According to him, one of the core ideas of the franchise is that anything is possible, so the possibility ofAdventure’s ending being retconned in the future can not be ignored.

Kinoshita’s Words Resonate to This Day

-BEYOND- Did Not Change the Epilogue

With the release of-BEYOND-and the announcement of theAdventuretimeline finally coming to an end, millions of fans have wondered if the franchise has decided toturn 02’s epilogue into non-canon material. The short video did not depict the DigiDestined on the same paths of life as their adult counterparts, hinting thatthis controversial updateis no longer official. Nevertheless, by remembering Kinoshita’s words, a similar conclusion as the one drawn afterKizuna’s release can be achieved.

Despite the differences in their interactions, professions, and appearances in this latest entry, there is still time for their stories to fall into place. As explained by the team behind the anniversary celebration, there is still a text-only adventure left for the cast of the original series to embark on. As such, it might be possible that Tai, his friends, andthe beloved original Digimonwill find their destiny during their final quest together.

A Sudden Change Could Also Be Possible

02’s Epilogue Might Be Difficult To Incorporate Into the Story

Even though theDigimonfranchise has not yet given hints about the ending of the02anime becoming unofficial, the team behind the series could find issues when trying to fit it into the timeline. Kinoshita proclaimed that nothing was set in stone, meaning that problems could arise that make it easier to eliminate the epilogue than to maintain it. For example, at no point during-BEYOND-did Tai express interest in politics, despite his adult version being the ambassador for the Digital World.

The fact that the cast is still nowhere near ready to have children of their own, regardless of the fact they were all parents during the sequel’s epilogue, might imply some changes have been made. Until the release of the final entry in theAdventuretimeline, it will be hard to determine if the epilogue has been altered in any significant way. Whatever occurs, it is almost certain that the team behindthis almost-perfect Isekai animewill do their best to give fans a memorable and worthwhile finale.
