Ryan Reynolds' comments concerning Deadpool’sMCUfuture afterDeadpool & Wolverinesuggest the Merc with a Mouth could copy exactly what Tony Stark’s Iron Man did back in Phase 3. After portraying Wade Wilson’s Deadpool in two self-titled movies in 20th Century Fox’sX-Menfranchise, Reynolds officially joined the MCU in 2024’sDeadpool & Wolverine. DespiteDeadpool & Wolverine’smassive success, however, the future for Reynolds' hilarious MCU antihero is uncertain, but it could follow the same trajectory as one original Avenger.

Many expected that Deadpool would be crossing over into the MCU’s main continuity permanently inDeadpool & Wolverine, and there was some surprise when this didn’t happen. Instead, the universe ofFox’sX-Menfranchise, now dubbed Earth-10005, survived the death of its Anchor Being and Cassandra Nova’s attack, leaving the door open for Deadpool to return in the MCU’s future.Ryan Reynolds hasn’t yet been confirmed to be reprising the role, however, and has suggested that Deadpool may work best copying Tony Stark’s Phase 3 trend, anyway.

Ryan Reynolds Revealed More About Deadpool In His Actors On Actors Interview With Andrew Garfield

In the wake ofDeadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds joined former Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield in an interview forVariety’s Actors on Actorsseries. At the 36:05 mark in their interview, Garfield questions what the future holds for Deadpool, andReynolds suggests the character works best one of two ways:“One is scarcity and surprise… [and] as a supporting character.“Reynolds notes that Deadpool can’t be a main character unless everything in his life is put on the line, and there’s only so many times this can be done effectively.

Ryan Reynolds stating that"if [Deadpool] comes back, it’s gonna be in someone else’s movie"hints at what audiences might be able to expect fromDeadpool’s future in the MCU. While the fact thatDeadpool & Wolverinecrossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office could make the development of a sequel inevitable, this shouldn’t happen unless Deadpool’s story and character demands it, and this doesn’t seem to be the case. Thankfully,Marvel Studios has already proven this can work, as this is exactly what Tony Stark’s Iron Man did in Phase 3.

Deadpool’s Supporting Character Future Could Be His Best Chance For A Long MCU Journey

Deadpool’s Solo Movie Story Could Benefit From Ending On A High

Tony Stark’s Iron Man already proved that a character could still be significant in the MCU despite not having any solo movies, so if Ryan Reynolds decides that Deadpool works best as a supporting character in the future, this certainly won’t harm the character. This also wouldn’t mean that Deadpool would just never be seen, and, in fact, could imply the opposite.Stark made five appearances followingIron Man 3, which comprised half his entire career in the MCUand arguably saw him explore grander stories, so this could actually be a huge advantage to Deadpool.
