With the return of theNew Godsto DC’s Universe, the writer of the new series is teasing a long-awaited explanation for one of the most ‘magical’ or unexplained superpowers in existence:Mister Miracle’s ability to escape any trap imaginable. But the answer likely won’t be what fans have predicted.
In aReddit AMA(“Ask Me Anything”), master DC Comics storyteller and artist Ram V fielded questions aboutbringingNew Godsback for DC’s All-Inera. When asked about one New God in particular, Ram V hints that the upcomingNew Godsseries couldcrack the code of what makes ‘magic’ tick for at least one hero, and the science potentially used to unwrap the mystery:

Speaking of Scott, the words “Mister Miracle” are always followed by “Super Escape Artist”. Will we be seeing him doing crazy stunts in the book? And if so, is it fun to make up new ways for him to escape traps?
Ram V: “We have a very cool reason for why he’s the greatest escape artist :).Without getting into Heisenberg’s principle and Quantum entanglement. I think MM’s powers will be very cool indeed, yes.Not quite designing traps in the classical sense. Though there might be some of those!”

What This Scientific Tease For Mister Miracle’s Powers Means For The New Gods
Can DC’s Magic Be Broken Down with Science?
Ram V would go on to elaborate further on this tease of magic and science in the comingNews Godsseries with artist Evan Cagle (albeit, still not giving anything away in terms fo spoilers). It’s a straightforward enough question for any modern incarnation of the New Gods, when considering the nature of magic and science as it relates to characters or mythology like that of Jack Kirby’s Fourth World. Especially for a storytellers like Ram V, who has frequently injected and explored the supernatural in everything fromSwamp ThingstoBatman’s gothic opera inDetective Comics.
Darkseid’s Son Gets a Shocking New Look as DC Relaunches Their NEW GODS Universe
The New Gods are returning to the DC Universe and Darkseid’s son Orion steps into the spotlight with a new look that fans are going to want to see.
When Redditor ‘Blitzhelios’ asked if magic would be as present as one might epect from a cosmology like Kirby’s, Ram V explained how it would (or wouldn’t) be a major theme inNew Gods:
I’ve done so many magic books! I wanted to go a slightly different direction with this. It’s still going to have those elements butperhaps with a bit more of a fringe-science angle to it, more than magic!
Our Take On The New Gods Turning To ‘Fringe Science’ Over Mysticism
If Ram V Plans to Recontextualize Magic in The DC Universe, We’re Here For It
Magic has quietly cemented itself as one of the most powerful abilities and power sources within the DC Universe. So powerful, in fact, thatnot even Superman can touch magic users(literally), allowing magic to have mere mortals into rulers, and rulers into gods. So it’s a bit strange that for all the theories, very few comic fans would be able to actually explain how magic operates. And for that reason, anyone remotely interested in how magic works in the DC Universe should be fascinated to see how Ram V will be tackling it inNew Gods.
While Ram V is only teasing the coming exploration of uncertainty and quantum science as a possible path to explaining Mister Miracle’s gifts, it’s hard not to imagine the start of a greater understanding.Could the magic-like abilities or nature of the New Gods be tied to fringe science across the board? And if that’s the case for one world of heroes and villains in DC Comics, could it be applied to magic users of all shapes and sizes? How Ram V executes this under the DC Comicsbanner remains to be seen, but it is likely to have a huge ripple effect for the entire Fourth World, not just its beloved Scott Free.
