Captain Atom’s Comic Book Origin, Explained

Captain Atom, Despite His Great Power, is a Second Stringer

Co-created by Steve Ditko for Charlton Comics in 1960, Captain Atom would become a part of the DC Universe in the mid-1980s. A former Air Force officer, Nathaniel Adam, was part of an experiment that hurled him forward in time but also gave him fantastic powers. Taking the name Captain Atom, he would become one of DC’s most prominent heroes of the late 1980s. Captain Atom was a key part of stopping the Dominator’s plans in theInvasioncrossover event, which led to a spot leading the European branch of the Justice League.

Drawing his power from a mysterious force called the “Quantum Field,” the upper limits of Captain Atom’s powers have never been charted, and it is speculated there may actually be no limit to what he can do.

However, Captain Atom’s heyday quickly faded, and the character became relegated to guest-star status, despite the fact he’s one of DC’s heaviest hitters. Drawing his power from a mysterious force called the “Quantum Field,” the upper limits of Captain Atom’s powers have never been charted, and it is speculated there may actually be no limit to what he can do. His powers are energy-based. He can absorb and manipulate energy, and fire it off in blasts at his opponents. The prospect of a mega-powerful being like Captain Atom turning evil is scary.

Superman Should Fear Captain Atom

Captain Atom Can Elude Superman’s X-Ray Vision

Yet what truly makes Captain Atom unique among the other heroes of the DC Universe is that he is one of the few who can defeat Superman. In the alternate universe ofInjustice,Captain Atom unleashes the fullbrunt of his powers on an evil Superman. Captain Atom had Superman nearly defeated, and might have finished the job if not for Wonder Woman. Captain Atom now has another advantage over the Man of Steel, in that he can avoidSuperman’sX-Ray vision, making him harder to detect and harder to beat.
