Buffy the Vampire SlayerandAngelstar David Boreanaz has added new fuel to the fire in the unresolved debate of Buffy choosing between Angel and Spike. Angel and Buffy had a doomed on-again-off-again romance for the first three seasons of the show. Introduced in season 2, Spike developed an unrequited love for her in season 5, beforeBuffy and Spike entered a toxic relationshipthe following year. After regaining his soul, Spike tried to better himself to become worthy of herlove. Debates about whom Buffy should be with have raged on ever since.

As both of her former vampire love interests had a similar style of dressing, most notably often wearing long flowing leather jackets,Boreanaz asks “Is that Angels jacket or Spikes?“The flurry of comments that follow from fans include people picking between the two, and throwing out some joke alternatives like Cordelia, Faith, Riley, or both. Gellar has not yet responded to the question.

What Boreanaz’s Question Means For Buffy The Vampire Slayer

The Debate Will Begin Again

The upcomingBuffy the Vampire Slayerrebootwill have to address the love triangle. While Buffy and Angel’s relationship ostensibly had to end due to Boreanaz being spun off into his own series,it narratively made sense for the pair to finally break up. Having them constantly in a state of high drama in a Shakespearean-style romance had run its course. For the remainder of the series, both would pine for their lost love and were regularly reunited. With many viewers having their own preference for Buffy’s love interest, their almost yearly reunions helped keep the debate going.

For as much as all three characters discussed their respective relationships, the trio have not interacted in a scene together since season 3.

Spike and Buffy’s relationship took a very different path, as she was reviled by him before entering a relationship that was primarily physical. Still a demon, Spike attempted to rape Buffy after she broke things off with him. After going through trials to regain his soul, the character changes and Buffy confesses to Spike that she loves him before he sacrifices himself in the series finale. Spike questions this, responding “No, you don’t. But thanks for saying it.“If Buffy ever loved Spike is up for the viewer to decide. Boreanaz’s question reflects that, as Buffy ultimately never picked either.

Our Take On Angel Vs Spike

Buffy Is Best With Neither Of Them

For as much as all three characters discussed their respective relationships, the trio have not interacted in a scene together since season 3. During theBuffy the Vampire Slayerfinale, Angel asks if she loves Spike, and she responds that it isn’t his business. The pair part ways, understandingBuffy needs time for herself. However, as soon as Spike is resurrected onAngel, the first thing he and Angel do is start arguing over her. Late in the final season ofAngel, they tentatively agree it’s something they need to let go of, but, of course, never will.

Gellar is confirmed to return as Buffy, and following up over 20 years later, her personal life will come up. Boreanaz’s comment is a reminder that this long-running debate has to be resolved. Realistically, Buffy in her 40s won’t be with an immortal vampire, but the show always needs some added soap opera elements. While there is no confirmation at this time that Boreanaz or James Marsters (Spike) will reprise their roles, it’s good to see theBuffy the Vampire Slayerstar engaging with his past show in a fun way.
