Star Wars: New Jedi Order Writer Gives First Hints As To Plot, Revealing George Lucas Inspiration

Daisy Ridley has implied thatStar Wars: New Jedi Ordercould be the beginning of a new series. TheupcomingStar Wars: New Jedi Order, which does not have an official title announced, was being written by Steven Knight, who has since departed, and has Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy attached to direct. It is set to feature the return of Ridley’s sequel trilogy character Rey, who debuted in 2015’sThe Force Awakensand has not appeared in the live-action franchise since 2019’sThe Rise of Skywalker, which is the most recent feature-length installment in the series at the time of writing.

In a recent profile withThe Hollywood Reporter, Daisy Ridley spoke about her upcomingStar Warsproject. She reflected on it being “scary” to return to the role of Rey after more than five years, but said that “it’ll be interesting to come back to someone who I know so well.” However, the most telling part of her quote was describing the upcoming project as “the new one/new ones.” Thisseemingly implies that there could be more than just one moviein which Rey returns. I feel like the new one/new ones will be so interesting. Time has passed and a lot has changed for me, personally, so it’ll be interesting to come back to someone who I know so well, but in such a different moment. For me to inhabit Rey again after all the time that we haven’t seen her, it’s actually scary, but it’s also exciting.

What Daisy Ridley’s Comment Means For Star Wars

She May Be Following Up On Previous Hints

It is entirely possible thatRidley’s comment could be misinterpreted. She may be referring to the multitude ofupcomingStar Warsmoviesthat are currently in varying stages of development, including the Disney+ series continuation TheMandalorian & Grogu, James Mangold’sDawn of the Jedimovie, and Dave Filoni’sNew Republicproject. At the same time, though, there’s no real reason she should be privy to those conversations, so the comment is significant.

The Mandaloriancreator Jon Favreau is the director and co-writer of the upcoming movie.

Rather, it seems that the starmay be following up on previous hints she has made about the movie. This includes a recent appearance at aColliderevent where she stated that the project was “evolving.” She could have been referring to any number of developments, including the fact that the screenwriter recently exited the project. However, it may be the case thatRey’sNew Jedi Ordermoviewill be expanding into multiple features, kicking off a new series of direct sequels.

Our Take On Daisy Ridley’s Potential Star Wars Series

This Could Become A Major Development For The Universe

If these hints do indeed point toStar Wars: New Jedi Orderbecoming the first installment of a continuing series, this could mean that the new movies willfunctionally become Episodes X through XII of the flagship series. It remains to be seen if they are billed as such, but the presence of a main character from one of the core trilogies on a timeline that takes place after the previous installments would mean they will be a direct continuation in a way that previous standalone moviesRogue OneandSolowere not.

The tenth mainline installment in the Star Wars franchise is the first movie to follow the sequel trilogy, where Mark Hamill’s Luke, Carrie Fisher’s Leia, and Harrison Ford’s Han Solo gave their final farewell. After the release of The Rise of Skywalker, development on a direct sequel had become dormant as Disney shifted focus on other parts of the galaxy, namely, Disney+ shows such as The Mandalorian, Andor, and Ahsoka.
