The entire TV franchise began back in 2014 with the premiere ofBosch,which chronicles the titular detective as he ruthlessly hunts down the truth while working the Hollywood homicide beat in Los Angeles. Deftly adapting Connelly’s best-selling book series,Boschenthralled viewers throughout its seven-season run but was canceled in 2021. However, Harry Bosch didn’t stay away for long, and was quickly brought back in a revival series.

Opening with narration from Ballard as she laments the poor reputation of the LAPD, the trailer then shows thatshe’s determined to personally improve its reputation by cracking cold cases. However, the cases aren’t that cold, and the seasoned detective is shown sparring with a few suspects. The teaser ends with Harry Bosch arriving to have a word with the title character.

After it was revealed that Maggie Q would assume the role of iconic Michael Connelly character, Renée Ballard, in season 3 ofBosch: Legacy, a spinoff centering on her character was also announced.The series will center on Detective Ballard as she attempts to keep the underfunded Cold Case Division of the LAPD runningwhile working with a volunteer force. Many details are still unknown about the spinoff, but Michael Connelly, Michael Alaimo, Kendall Sherwood, and Trish Hofmann are once again serving as producers.

It was always expected thatBallardwould arrive at some point in 2025, and that is corroborated by the fact thatproduction got underway in July 2024. To commemorate the beginning of the show’s production, author Michael Connelly shared a BTS photo from the set on his officialInstagramaccount. Connelly also announced thatfilming was completed by the end of November 2024. Its still not clear exactly when the series will arrive, but it could debut some time in the summer or early fall.

Maggie Q Stars As Detective Renée Ballard
Though the ensemble cast ofBallardis still largely unformed, a few big additions have been made. First and foremost,Mission: ImpossiblestarMaggie Q has been tapped to play the titular role, a dedicated detective from Maui who carries the underfunded and understaffed Cold Case Division of the LAPD. Maggie Q is joined by seasoned character actorJohn Carroll Lynch (American Horror Story) as retired detective Thomas Laffontwho uses his free time to assist Renée in her investigations.Courtney Taylor (Neon) will play Samira Parker, a mysterious woman on a quest for justice.
Several other recurring cast members have been announced, though nothing is known about their roles yet. Joining Q, Lynch, and Taylor,Michael Mosley (The Calling), Rebecca Field (Shameless), Victoria Moroles (Plan B), and Amy Hill (Mom)will all factor into the spinoff’s ensemble cast. Titus Welliver is expected to reprise his role as Harry Bosch, though it’s unclear how frequently he’ll appear in the spinoff.
