One of the twelve new subclasses coming inBaldur’s Gate 3’seighth patch is Bladesinging, a spellblade option for wizards. It’s a fan favorite in itsDungeons & Dragonsform sinceit was first introduced in the second edition. The subclass combines the wizard’s intellect with dextrous mobility and grace, often alongside the features of elves for maximum effect.
There are already a number ofsubclasses inBaldur’s Gate 3that work well for spellblades, from the eldritch knight to the war cleric, and even one other coming in the eighth patch: the hexblade. However, Bladesinging is distinct both for its reliance on multiple ability scores to be effective and its unique method of wielding weapons. It will bring some fun new options forBG3players to try out on their next characters.

Bladesinging Wizards Balance Their Intelligence And Dexterity
A Gish With A High Barrier To Entry
While other spellblades, like thepact of the blade warlock, often consolidate their features to only focus on one or two ability scores, the Bladesinger requires a lot of its users. It needs high intelligence for its spellcasting and high dexterity for its weapon attacks, and, on top of that, it needs a pretty high constitution to stay standing in melee combat. Most Bladesingers dump their strength and charisma, but wisdom is often useful for passing saving throws, especially inBaldur’s Gate 3, meaning thata Bladesinger’s ability scores are very divided.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 Announced With Long-Requested Features, Including 12 New Subclasses
Baldur’s Gate 3 will be addressing some popular feature requests in the newly-announced Patch 8 update, set to arrive sometime in 2025.
It makes the barrier to entry for this subclass pretty high, but it also means they get exponentially more powerful as they level up. While multiclassing isn’t viable using this subclass, it is hardly necessary, as it brings all the features a mage or martial character could want. Plus, wizards in this game are already incredibly powerful with their ability tolearn from spell scrolls inBG3, sothis subclass is shaping up to be a powerhouse in the game’s third act.

A Class That Is More ‘Spell’ Than ‘Blade’
Bladesingers Put Their Arcane Power First
The Bladesinger is a caster first, with full access to spell slots of all levels and lower hit points than many martial classes typically have. Still, it achieves a good balance between its weapon and spell attacks, able to exchange one attack for a cantrip each turn. But its main feature, calledBladesong, is more defensive, adding the Bladesinger’s intelligence modifier to its AC and buffing its speed.
Bladesingers are especially powerful with access to weapon-modifying cantrips like green flame-blade and booming blade, which don’t exist inBG3by default. However, they are available via mods.
It’s not confirmed yet what exactly the abilities of thesubclass will be inBG3, asthey are liable to be altered from their TTRPG roots. Still, the existing mechanics for the Bladesinger should function pretty well. While they may have some overlap with the abilities ofBaldur’s Gate 3’s abjuration wizard, they should provide a good spread of features for wizards to bolster their offensive and defensive abilities.
