Warning: Spoilers ahead forShrinkingseason 2, episodes 1-7.Apple TV+‘sShrinkingleans into the comedy side of its dramedy genre label to influence the actors the show brings into the fold, leading to an all-star guest ensemble. The newest additions to theShrinkingcasthave increased the already impressive profile of Bill Lawrence’s show by introducing actors from several hit sitcoms in roles of varying importance. AlthoughShrinking’s main characters remain the story’s focus, the newer figures are impossible to ignore due to the pedigree of the actors playing them.
Led by huge names like Jason Segal and Harrison Ford,Shrinkinghas quickly become one of thebest shows on Apple TV+. Its ability to pivot quickly between emotional moments and sidesplitting gags is a signature move of showrunner Bill Lawrence, andShrinkingdoes it just as well as Lawrence’s other projects - likeScrubsandTed Lasso. Even if some of the stars aren’t there permanently, it’s tough to argue thatShrinkingisn’t also building one of thebest ensemble TV castsever. It could also continue to collect more sitcom legends now thatShrinkingseason 3 has been confirmed.

Shrinking Season 2’s Cast Now Includes Actors From Scrubs, Cougar Town, New Girl & Ted Lasso
Apple TV+ hasn’t shied away from casting big names
Lawrence has worked on so many shows now that it’s clear he has a preference for working with certain actors over others. That being said, Krista Miller’s presence as Liz inShrinkingis the show’s only casting that can be attributed to Lawrence’s collection of frequent collaborators. However,Shrinking’s litany of impressive guest stars all come from hit comedy shows. For instance,Shrinkingseason 2’s introduction of the man who killed the wife of Segal’s character is played by Brett Goldstein - most known for his time working with Lawrence while playing Roy Kent inTed Lasso.
Zach Braff, who played JD inall nine seasons ofScrubs, has also directed three episodes ofShrinking.

Lawrence has strengthened theShrinkingseason 2 castin other ways. Firstly, there is the return of Neil Flynn as Raymond - who debuted inShrinkingseason 1.Flynn is known for playing the Janitor inScrubs, and also Mike Heck in inThe Middle.Shrinkingseason 2 has also included aminiCougar Townreunion by introducing Josh Hopkinsas Mac to ruin the relationship of his former co-star’s character, Liz. If all of that wasn’t enough, thenDamon Wayans Jr.‘sShrinkingcharacter will bring back many memories forNew Girlfans - in which the actor played Coach.
Is Shrinking Underutilizing Its Season 2 Guest Stars?
Bill Lawrence can’t seem to find enough for some of his new actors to do
As many massive guest stars as there have been inShrinking, it could be argued that the show has become a little over-saturated as a result. There are already huge names among the main cast, so they often need to take a little more of a secondary role whenever a new actor enters the fray. Alternatively, the temporary additions to the cast are given very little to do. To give an example,Neil Flynn’s character has only ever appeared in a handful of momentsand has had virtually no impact on the larger story.

Similarly, while Hopkin’s character is a major disruption, pretty much anyone could have filled this role. That being said,Damon Wayans Jr. is being put to good useas the love interest of Jessica William’s Gaby. Brett Goldstein’s complex character has also been a great addition to the show. So, although results have been mixed,Shrinking’s slew of established sitcom guest stars has done more good than harm.
