Matthew Lillard addresses whether he is returning forScream 7. Lillard played Stu Macher in the 1996 original version of the movieScream.Stu is a friend and accomplice to Billy Loomis, and a secondary antagonist in the film, who goes on a murder spree along with Billy. InScream(2022) Billy returned as a hallucination, appearing in the franchise years after he was killed off.Scream VIwas put out the following year, and now,Scream 7is in development.

Speaking withCollider,Lillard discusses whether he would return to theScreamfranchise. According to the actor, he is “not involved in Scream.” He then coyly said that he must be a “great liar” if he is involved inScream7, also saying “Am I telling the truth? Who wants to know the truth?” He then jokes about his on-screen death, saying “Every Thursday of the second month [he] drop[s] a TV on [his] head. [He’s] like ‘he’s still alive!’.” Check out the full quote from Lillard below:

I am not involved inScream, and if I am, I’m agreatliar. I don’t know! Am I telling the truth? Who wants to know the truth? I don’t know. Every Thursday of the second month I drop a TV on my head. I’m like, ‘He’s still alive! Put him in the movie!'

What This Means For The Scream Franchise

Stu’s Return Would Be Hard To Manage

In his quippy response, Lillard does bring up a legitimate challenge of bringing Stu back to theScreamfranchise. In the original 1996 movie,Stu was killed by protagonist Sidney Prescott. His method of death was being electrocuted and crushed by a 50-pound CRT TV landing on his head. As Lillard humorously notes in his statement, it would be tough for Stu to survive that. So, if they were to bring him back, the series would have a lot of explaining to do.

Every Scream Movie, Ranked By Scariness

The Scream franchise has always strived for laughs just about as much as scares, and some strike the balance better than others.

Just because Stu is not returning, however, does not mean that there will not be a cameo from Lillard at some point inScream 7. After all, Lillard did appear in 2022’sScreamin an uncredited voice cameo despite Stu not being in the movie. With Lillard being so sly about whether he is involved inScream, an appearance of this nature still seems possible. Time will tell as development onScream 7continues; as it stands, it is not set to release until 2026.

Our Take On Matthew Lillard’s Scream Return Chances

Scream Has Brought Back Characters Before

On its face, Stu’s return forScream 7would be absurd given his death. However, theScreamfranchise has been known to have unexpected returns. Hayden Panettiere’s character died off-screen at theend ofScream 4, but she ended up returning forScream VIyears later. The big difference between these deaths would be that Lillard’s occurred on-screen rather than off, but nonetheless shows that there is precedent for the series to go in unexpected directions.
