Remember last week , when we say Alcatraz was getting sorta interesting ? Well … we may have speak too shortly . “ Paxton Petty ” was an extremely dull outing , in which the criminal mastermind of the calendar week was a mad bomber , with like four bombs .

Just a quicky recapitulation this time , as we apply our patented Alcatraz - oxygen - meter to break off it all down . Spoilers ahead …

This week ’s sentence - journey rapscallion : Paxton Petty , a Korean War vet whose M.O. is to impart land mines scattered around , according to the row of a cradlesong . He ’s like the Riddler , except with songs instead of conundrum .

What emotional unfinished business organisation does our gyp - of - the - week grapple with ? He feel annoyed that he did n’t get a Silver Star for his service in Korea and he drop off his pension and poppycock … just because he went and killed a bunch of Korean kids with his pesky landmines . The estimate that the Korean War , with all its MAS*H - esque repulsion , could have driven a guy crazy , is sort of toyed with but never really explored in an interesting way .

What unethical things do the “ practiced guys ” do to keep the Alcatraz thing a secret ? They ’re pretty cagey about let the local bomb calorimeter squad know who they ’re dealing with , but it ’s not that big a deal this time around .

Hurley ’s cute geeky dude moment of the workweek : Umm … there are a bunch of them . He gain some comic reference point and talks about quantum mechanics . He meets a cute geeky girl in the morgue and speak to her about the Golden Age Sandman and attempt to entice her to his comic book storage . Will we see morgue fille again ? Let ’s hope so , she was at least precious and competent . Oh , and San Francisco geometry continues to be ultra - eldritch in this substitute existence .

Tough - but - evil Emerson Hauser moment of the workweek : I ’m beginning to think that the author have turn over up on making Emerson iniquity . He does shoot Paxton Petty in the stage . And he take to be cryptic on the phone with Rebecca , or else of just saying , “ Hey , there ’s a berceuse , and here ’s one of the hint for you to look into out . ” ( And that want of sharing essentially lead to Emerson almost catch himself spoil up . ) But meanwhile , we learn that Emerson had a romanticism going with Dr. Sangupta back in 1960 , when Emerson would have been like 15 . ( If he was 18 in 1963 , as we were originally told . )

What do we learn about Rebecca ’s grand - daddy issue ? Almost nothing . At one point , we see her grandpa back in 1960 , when he talks to Dr. Sangupta and asks her to feel out why he ask to expend so much time in the infirmary sire his rake drawn , despite being totally hefty . Other than that , Ray does n’t appear , and Tommy is n’t around in the present day . Nor is the relationship between Rebecca and her surrogate grandpa , Emerson , that interesting this time around .

The workweek ’s secret fodder : Dr. Sangupta ask Dr. Beauregard why Tommy Madsen ’s having his blood draw , and Dr. Beauregard kind of menace her . Meanwhile , in the present day , Emerson takes Dr. Sangupta ’s plainly lifeless trunk to Dr. Beauregard and tells him to “ fix her ” using her own methods . Oh , and we incur out that Paxton Petty essentially “ went to rest ” in 1963 and woke up in 2012 — in a grave where he stored his explosive , not in Alcatraz . And like the other inmates , he have it away about cellphones and stuff .

How sadistic are the flashback scene , on a exfoliation of Club Fed to Gitmo ? Dr. Beauregard and the gang attempt to question Paxton Petty in a bathtub full of ice , to find out where his last landmine is placed . ( And despite being brought up a lot in the instalment , that landmine never becomes an interesting secret plan point . ) Later , Dr. Sangupta drugs Paxton and then uses electrical shock therapy on him .

This week ’s random present moment of creepiness : I guess the contrasting method of torture — ice rink - bathtub drowning , versus drugs and burning — would have to be it . Kind of a forgettable instalment , honestly .
