The exploits of church-affiliated supernatural investigators Kristen, David and Ben were first aired on CBS, beforeEvilwas shifted over to streaming onParamount+. The switch to a less content-restrictive platform proved fortuitous, as creators Michelle and Robert King took the show into increasingly dark, twisted and sometimes kinky territory. Going darker and weirder helped the show’s critical acclaim, as reflected in its Rotten Tomatoes fresh rating, which climbed from 92% for season 1, to 100% for seasons 3 and 4 (on an admittedly limited number of reviews).
Critics may have identifiedEvilas a good under-the-radar show, but Paramount+ in 2024 decided to pull the plug, even though the Kings and their cast wished to make more.Evilseason 4 recently wrapped up, delivering a satisfying finale for those fans the show was able to capture. Chances thatEvilseason 5could happen, thanks to another streamer, look remote, despite star Katja Herbers appealing to Netflix directly on social media.

The Streamer Has Been Called On To Save The Show
Evilonly seemed to get better as the seasons progressed. Its three main cast members, Herbers, Mike Colter and Aasif Mandvi, developed great chemistry as the dogged trio of investigators at the center of the story. Michael Emerson continued to shine as big bad Leland, while Andrea Martin, Wallace Shawn and other solid supporting actors arrived to create memorable characters in their own right.
TheEvilapproach is not dissimilar toThe X-Files: traditional TV monster-of-the-week storytelling tied together with an overarching mythology. There was even a Mulder-and-Scully quality to David and Kristen’s relationship, right down to the will-they-or-won’t-they sexual tension. Indeed, the show’s unique brand of tone-shifting storytelling fits the episodic format perfectly. There is enough variety to keep things interesting week-to-week, but there are also bigger narrative arcs tying the action together, while raising the stakes.

Evilis indeed the kind of show that could go on for a lot longer than four seasons, especially in the streaming era, when seasons normally don’t run past 10 episodes. It was seemingly just hitting its stride when it got canceled, making it doubly disappointing that the plug was pulled. Hopefully, Netflix will look at streaming numbers forEvilseasons 1-3 and decide to take a chance on continuing the ride. On the other hand, given the show’s cultish appeal, producing more episodes may not be that attractive a proposition for any streamer, critical kudos notwithstanding.
