Doctor Whois rapidly approaching its fifteenth season, which will mark the second of Ncuti Gatwa’s era as the Doctor, and with the exception of a few hints from the crew here and there, everything is still being kept tightly under wraps. Thefirst trailer forDoctor Who’s season 15aired following the recent Christmas special, and gave audiences their first glimpse of the upcoming adventures, with several familiar locations and new faces making appearances.

Thankfully, the crew behindDoctor Whohasn’t been entirely silent during this tantalizing gap between seasons. Many of the show’s writers and actors have spoken about what can be expected from the upcoming episodes, and one important figure has given an interesting interview that could be hinting at a beloved character making their return. The recentDoctor WhoChristmas special left some problems to resolve, and this figure’s comeback would be a perfect opportunity to do just that.

Doctor Who Season 15’s Finale Is Somehow Connected To Steven Moffat

The Doctor Who Showrunner Has Some Connection To The Upcoming Finale

In 2024,Doctor Who’s previous showrunner Steven Moffat gave aRadio Timesinterview that has sparked plenty of speculation among fans. In the interview (which was conducted last May), Moffat revealed that while he hadn’t read the script for “Empire of Death,” he’d been given early access to the script for season 15’s finale “for reasons that will become apparent.” This seems to imply that the upcoming finale will be related to something he’s written before, whether that be a character or a longer story arc, and that he needed to sign off on it first.

Doctor Who Season 15 All But Confirms The Next Main Villain After Sutekh

Doctor Who’s latest trailer seems to be hinting towards a certain character becoming the “big bad” of the upcoming season later in 2025.

Althoughit’s possible that the current showrunner Russell T. Davies will be bringing something from Moffat’s 2010-2017 era backfor the season 15 finale, it’s much more likely that he’ll be building on something from Moffat’s more recent episodes. The most obvious answer is that this episode will somehow be related to “Boom,” as it’s been confirmed that Varada Sethu will appear in both episodes — but there’s an equally plausible, less obvious alternative.

Doctor Who’s Upcoming Finale Could Bring Back “Joy To The World”’s Anita

Anita Didn’t Get Nearly Enough Screen Time In Doctor Who

WhileAnita (Steph de Whalley) was given her happy ending inDoctor Who’s Christmas special, she was present for a whole year of the Doctor’s life that hasn’t been fully explored. The current showrunner could be returning to this period with his next season finale, giving Anita a larger role and connecting the episode back to this Christmas special. That’s exactly what he did with “Empire of Death,” using plot points from “The Church on Ruby Road” to resolve the series' big mystery, and could now be getting ready to do it again inDoctor Who’s fifteenth season.
